In Toronto, Canada late in 1985 Dr Maureen Johnston, the Founder of the World Masters Games conceived the idea of the World Corporate Games. Dr. Johnston saw that there was a need for a project that offered everyone of every age and ability the chance to play sport on a worldwide basis, represent a team, wear its colours and be proud to be part of a multisport festival for businesses, organisations, institutions and societies of every size and kind.
The Games were to have no barriers to participation and would be the first open equally in every respect to women and men. They would also be the first to integrate participants with disabilities. She founded Sport For Life, an Organisation dedicated to bringing global sporting competition within the reach of everyone.
San Francisco, the business centre of California proudly staged the first World Corporate Games in 1988 and it was an instant success. Hawaii followed and became the 3rd World Corporate Games, then Lille (France) in 1991 under the Patronage of President Mitterrand, and London hosted a magnificent World Corporate Games in 1992, with more than 6000 participants in the United Kingdom.
This brilliant start enabled the Corporate Games to establish its events in a variety of impressive Cities such as Sydney, Kuala Lumpur, Johannesbourg, Zagreb, Budapest, Stuttgart, Seville, Den Hague, Bilbao, Moscow, Istanbul, Montevideo, Belfast, Auckland, New Guinea, Nigeria, Bucharest, Abu Dhabi, Annecy-Le-Vieux, Buenos Aires, Mexico and Tokyo to name a few.

The highlight of the Games was getting to know colleagues better. You see some people every day in the office but don’t really get the chance to talk a great deal on a personal level.
The Medal Presentations were the highlight of the event ; it was such an amazing atmosphere. You could see the genuine smiles on all athletes who gained the reward after their hard work and perseverance. It was indeed a fulfilling and enjoyable weekend.
I think the Corporate Games team has done a great job with promoting sport in the corporate sector. It was definitely a good start and our teams did enjoy the competitions, we were all happy and also won prizes. Our view is that the event was well organized and was run in a smooth and professional manner.
